The name "Wellies" originates from the famous British general, the Duke of Wellington (1769–1852). During his battles against Napoleon, he found wet feet uncomfortable and commissioned special boots to be made. These became known as "Wellington Boots," later shortened to the affectionate nickname "Wellies." Originally crafted as military footwear, these boots eventually evolved into practical, colorful rubber boots that became an iconic British fashion item. Today, they are recognized as a trendy item on London's Regent Street and King's Road, as well as New York's Fifth Avenue.

Our hotel's name "Wellies" was chosen by the previous owner, Chris, inspired by this rich British cultural heritage. We have now inherited this name and continue to operate the hotel in Karuizawa, cherishing the spirit it represents.
