From Tokyo Station
  • Take the Nagano Line Shinkansen (bullet train) to JR Karuizawa Station takes about an hour and costs roughly ¥5,800 one way or check out the "JR Kanto Pass" for 3 days or less. is useful for Japan train schedules.
From JR Karuizawa Station
  • Wellies Shuttle Service: (10 minutes / FREE) We can usually pick you up (except peak times), but please contact us beforehand and inform us of your ETA and Shinkansen number.
  • Shinano Local Train: (5 minutes / ¥230) One stop to Naka Karuizawa from JR Karuizawa Station. After exiting the Shinkansen ticket barrier turn left and after 30 meters you will find the Shinano line entrance. Upon arriving at Naka-Karuizawa station, take the North exit and we will either be waiting for you, or it is a short taxi ride to Wellies, or a pleasant 7 minute walk. See map above.
  • Taxi: (10 minutes / ¥2,000) After the Shinkansen ticket barrier, turn left and come down the escalator to the taxi rank. Be aware that during busy hours, the traffic can be very congested on R18, and the Shinano train is a better option.
  • If you arrive early, an option is to use the coin lockers for your luggage and either ski at Prince or receive retail therapy at the large Outlet shopping mall prior to checking in at Wellies.
By car
  • Karuizawa is quite spread out, renting a car can be convenient (though our first preference is bicycle). Make sure you have (the right) International Licence.  We found Toyota's English service efficient,
  • From Tokyo (good luck!), take the Kan-etsu Expressway to the Fujioka IC, then take the Shin-etsu to Usui-Karuizawa.
  • Note that some navigation systems still have the old name (DinnerBell) and even Google maps only gets you "close". Call us if you have trouble (0267 46 1670).
